ThyssenKrupp will benefit all of Alabama

ThyssenKrupp, a steelmaking company located in Germany, announced yesterday its intention to build a $4.19 billion steel plant in Calvert, which is about 25 miles north of Mobile.

This announcement should bring cheers from everyone in Alabama.

When opened in 2010, ThyssenKrupp officials say their plant will employ 2,700 workers when fully operational and could create as many as 38,000 jobs related to the project.

If not, don’t feel bad. No candidates are on the ballot, but that doesn’t mean the issues in the election aren’t important. Voters face two decisions.

Amendment 1 would increase the state’s bond debt limit from $350 million to $750 million. Gov. Bob Riley wants the money to finance incentive packages for companies that are considering new plants in Alabama.


Alabama Riley Was Faster Than Louisiana Blanco In ThyssenKrupp Decision

When there is a major victory by a state such as ThyssenKrupp’s choice of Alabama over Louisiana, everyone wonders about the reasons states competing for the project wins and loses.

In the aftermath, many point to the personal persuasive powers of the Alabama Governor Riley and his hands on approach to convincing ThyssenKrupp to land its steel plant in Alabama.

Which raises the question whether Governor Blanco was as responsive with information as was Governor Riley.

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco weren’t the only people anxiously waiting a predawn phone call Friday to learn the fate of the proposed ThyssenKrupp steel mill.

The vice chairmen of the executive boards of the two divisions of ThyssenKrupp that will produce steel at the new plant were in Jackson, Miss., roughly half way between the two final possible sites, waiting for the same news.

A few minutes before 5 a.m., the call came in to Peter Urban, vice chairman of ThyseenKrupp Steel, and Dr. Michael Rademacher, vice chairman of ThyssenKrupp Stainless: The decision of the supervisory board was to build the plant in Alabama along the line between Mobile and Washington counties.

While the decision clearly went the way Alabamians wanted it to go, did the executives hear what they wanted to hear? "Yes," said Urban with a smile in an interview shortly after the announcement was made.

Spokeswoman Felyicia Jerald said executives at the Mercedes plant in Vance were asked by Gov. Bob Riley’s office to share with ThyssenKrupp their perspectives on what it’s like to do business in Alabama.

State lands plant: Local leaders say Brewton can benefit

A German steelmaker’s plans to build a 2,700-employee plant in Mobile County could lead to a “multitude of opportunities” for Brewton and Escambia County, economic development officials said Friday.

“This project is the largest private, civilian economic development project in the history of the United States,” said Wiley Blankenship, president of the Coastal Gateway Economic Development Authority, a partnership of Escambia, Monroe and Conecuh counties. “It's a great day. They have created a multitude of opportunities for our region. That's what we wanted to occur.”

ThyssenKrupp announced Friday that it will build a $3.7 billion steel and stainless steel processing facility near Calvert and Mount Vernon. The plant is expected to begin operation in 2010, and the average salary for permanent positions will be $50,000 to $60,000, company officials have said. The project will also create up to 29,000 construction jobs.

Much of the opportunities for Escambia County lie in suppliers and spinoff plants, economic development officials said.

“This is a real boost for the economy for Mobile, Escambia, Washington and Baldwin counties,” said state Rep. Alan Baker, R-Brewton. “It’s been in the making for 16 months for Mobile County and the City of Mobile, but we should all benefit.”
