DHS ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF THE 2006 AFG
APPLICANT TUTORIAL
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security
announced today that the 2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG)
Applicant Tutorial is available for viewing at the grant support Web
site. To access the online tutorial, go to
www.firegrantsupport.com and click the
Applicant Tutorial link in the main menu.
This
year's online tutorial offers greater detail to applicants, along with
an option to select the specific subject matter of interest. By
choosing the subject of interest in the tutorial's table of contents,
applicants can quickly obtain the information they need to assist them
in drafting a successful grant presentation. The online applicant
tutorial also contains direct links to the 2006 Program Guidance to
ensure that the applicant has all the information available relating to
each portion of the application process. In an effort to provide
helpful information to applicants quickly and more efficiently, the
online AFG application now contains a link to the online tutorial.

Announces $30,000 Shoals' Entertainment Grant
Washington, D.C. --
U.S. Representative Bud Cramer (D-ALA) announced today that
the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOLG)
will receive a $30,000 grant from the Economic Development
Administration to prepare a strategic and marketing plan to
help develop the entertainment industry in Northwest
Alabama. NACOLG hopes to outline the necessary stops
to create a major entertainment industry in Northwest
Alabama.

Free Caregivers Program
If your daily routine includes providing care for an older
loved one in your home, support, information and assistance
is available at the local level. The Coalition of
Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders (CARD) is pleased to
announce a free Caregivers Program, scheduled for Wednesday,
July 14 from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the A. W. Todd
Center in Russellville, Alabama. Topics of discussion
include basic care issues, assisted living options,
nutrition/healthcare, Medicare & Medicaid, prescription
drugs, Hospice services and grief/emotional issues.

Aging Services & Legal Planning for the Elderly
A free informational seminar entitled “Aging Services &
Legal Planning for the Elderly,” sponsored by NACOLG’s
Department of Senior Services, is scheduled for Thursday,
July 22 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Darby Drive Church of
Christ in Florence, Alabama. Guest speaker, Jan Neal,
Attorney with Davis & Neal will discuss topics ranging from
advanced directives to planning for long-term care in
addition to providing information on wills and estates.

Caregivers Program
If your daily routine
includes providing care for an older loved one in your home,
support, information and assistance is available at the
local level. The Coalition of Alzheimer’s and Related
Disorders (CARD) is pleased to announce a free Caregivers
Program, scheduled for Wednesday, July 14 from 8:00 a.m.
until 2:30 p.m. at the A. W. Todd Center in Russellville,
Alabama. Topics of discussion include basic care issues,
assisted living options, nutrition/healthcare, Medicare &
Medicaid, prescription drugs, Hospice services and
grief/emotional issues. In addition to CARD, sponsors
include the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments,
Sunbridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and the Country
Cottage. The program is free of charge and includes lunch
for attendees. However, advanced registration is required as
there are only 300 seats available. To pre-register, call
the CARD office at (256) 766-5726 by July 7, 2004.

Transit will operate a shuttle bus free to the public for
the Helen Keller Festival ,on June 25, 26 from 9:00 a.m.
until the end of the concerts (11:30 - Midnight), and
Sunday, June 27 from 12:00 (noon) until 4:30 p.m.

program can get you out of the house at a fraction of the
cost. For a mere $1.50 one way, a public transit vehicle
will pick you up and deliver you to your destination
within the metro Shoals area, including the police
jurisdictions--within a three to four mile radius of
Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals.
Available Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00
p.m., the transit program can take you where you need to
go, including Regency Square Mall, local libraries,
doctors’ offices as well as local shopping centers and
municipal buildings. For more information or to schedule
your ride, call the Dial-A-Ride line at 314-0047.

Senior Citizens Appreciation Day scheduled for Friday, May
14, 2004. Sponsored by NACOLG’s Department of Aging
Services, the festivities will take place at the
Florence/Lauderdale Coliseum from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00
p.m. All activities, including lunch, are free of charge
and geared toward area residents aged 60 and older.

to Needy Elderly of the Shoals, Franklin, Marion, &
Winston Counties

items aren’t gracing your dinner table, NACOLG has a
resource that can help. Fresh produce is now available
free of charge to needy elderly of the Shoals area thanks
to an innovative program sponsored by NACOLG’s Department
of Aging Services. The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition
Program provides coupons redeemable for freshly grown
produce for qualifying residents aged 60 and older who
meet specific income limits.

NACOLG's Dept. of Senior
Services, along with the UNA Social Work Department are
co-sponsoring a community meeting for senior citizens of
Northwest Alabama. This meeting will be held on Wednesday,
April 28 from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the Guillot Banquet Hall
on UNA's campus. It's purpose is to draw attention of several
political and community issues that are of great interest to
local senior citizens.The meeting is free for participants.
Refreshments will be provided and there will be numerous door

Annual Senior Citizen's Appreciation Day.
This

Chairman

According
to Keith Jones, Executive Director of the Northwest
Alabama Council of Local Governments, Guin Mayor Phil
Segraves and Sheffield Mayor Ian Sanford were recently
elected as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the NACOLG Board
of Directors.
As one of 13 regional planning commissions
initiated by an act of
Alabama
legislature, NACOLG provides numerous public services to
the northwest corner of the state.
More specifically, the NACOLG region consists of
Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Marion and Winston counties
and the municipalities therein.
